Container farming, vertical farming and indoor farming all come under the umbrella term of Controlled Environment Agriculture or CEA. Container farming is the specific way of growing crops using shipping containers.

CEA is an exact science that has many benefits over traditional farming – Greater yield, smaller space required, can be set up virtually anywhere, crops are protected from outdoor influences such as extreme weather and pests, and higher return on investment (ROI).

Container farms are easily transported so can be set up where they are most needed, they can be sent to third-world countries, places that have been devastated by natural disasters, or just in settings that don’t have much space.

Due to their modular structure, they can be stacked on top of each other giving more growing space without increasing the space required. This makes it relatively easy to scale up operations when necessary. They can be used to set up permanent farms or research facilities, or for temporary use without the need to obtain planning permission.

Container farms have the potential to reduce our dependence on imported produce, reducing our carbon footprint and helping to strengthen our home-grown food market.
